Thinking in Generations
This heirloom redesign began with a client thinking not only about the jewellery she wanted to wear now, but about where it would eventually go.
Gold and natural gemstones from her own wedding jewellery and pieces belonging to her mother were brought together with new gold, platinum and natural diamonds. The original blue sapphires came from a wedding band, carrying another recognisable element of the existing jewellery into its new form.
Rather than creating a perfectly symmetrical pair, the stones were allowed to determine the design. Different sizes and quantities of diamonds flow through sweeping sections of recessed platinum and yellow gold, while the sapphires appear as small, deliberate flashes of deep blue.
The finished ring is actually two individually handcrafted rings, each beautiful enough to be worn on its own. For now, they have been soldered together and are worn as one substantial piece. Joining them prevents the rings rubbing against one another during years of wear, but there is another reason for the construction.
One day, they can be separated.
One ring will go to each of her two daughters.
For now, their mother wears both. Her own gold and gemstones sit alongside those of her mother, with new materials added for the generation still to come. Eventually the piece will divide, allowing each daughter to carry one half forward.
Every element was handcrafted by Christine Price Goldsmith, from melting and preparing the gold through to forming, setting and the final polish.
